YUM priorities install & configure

This guide will show you how to install and configure YUM priorities on RHEL / CentOS, however I suspect this will work fine on Fedora.

Install on CentOS 4

 yum install yum-plugin-priorities

Install on CentOS 5

 yum install yum-priorities

Confirm your priorities.conf file contains the following lines:

[root@server ~]# cat /etc/yum/pluginconf.d/priorities.conf
[main]
enabled = 1

Now you need to go through all your repositories and give them a priority number from 1-99 the repos with the lowest number gets the highest priority, so I normally set all the CentOS repos to 1. Below I have included my repos file as an example of how I have configured the CentOS repos, I would then give other repos a higher number, EPEL, DAG etc. This will ensure that packages come from the OS repos first, if they don’t exist then YUM will pull them from repos with a lower priority (EPEL, DAG, RPMForge, etc…).
